In the time between the 2008 campaign and now, the “birther” question has become the biggest joke on Conservatives since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s claim to be a right winger. Thing is, it wasn’t hard to make a gag of it either. It was the one thing that people seemed to obsess about even when the claims were proven false. It was the one piece of true extreme right wing behavior that the left could cling to in their storm of false accusations.
But it didn’t even belong to the right. In fact we didn’t even start it.
Flashback to the 2008 elections, the Hillary machine is in full swing against Barack Obama. The Democratic/Liberal crowd is at war with one another in an effort to get their man/woman elected while Conservatives are busy resigning themselves to the fact that their best chance was a RINO (Republican In Name Only) they didn’t even really like.
It was during this battle within the left that an organization that backed Hillary Clinton known as “The PUMAs”, an acronym for “Party Unity My Ass”, (we use acronyms everywhere in politics apparently) were seeking ways to get Obama out of Hillary’s way so she could have a clear shot at the White House. So they devised a brilliant plan that only a left winger could come up with; they would illigitimize Obama’s run for POTUS (Look another acronym!) by using the Constitutional law that anyone looking to be President must be born in America.
For now we’ll overlook the fact that anyone on the left would actually use the Constitution as it was written instead of warping it to fit their needs and focus on the story.
The Puma party sent out a number of chain emails questioning Obama’s origin of birth and asking others to raise the question themselves. It wasn’t long after that, that the question had caught fire and spread like the aforementioned element of the wild variety. From there, right wing bloggers would go on to ask the same question and the rest is history. Personally I could understand how such a simple thing that went unanswered for so long would raise so many questions but let’s take an inventory of what’s really going on here.
The main stream media did what I like to call “media jujitsu”. They are very proficient with this political fighting style and employ it often against the right, and it’s proven tried and true. All they have to do is take any action or words used by any republican or conservative individuals, reverse and twist them until anyone speaking against the left ends up with mud on their faces, and are forced to slink away in shame.
Using this strategy the DNC, the MSM, the MMFA, and the LOLOMGWTFROFL were able to take what many on the right thought was their most powerful swing and quickest way to defeat Obama, and used it to paint the entirety of the right as a lunatic fringe. Cheap move, I know, but the left has to take what we give them, and we don’t give them much.
But even with the insistence of the group of people who continued to push the birther question taking a big portion of the blame, it can’t be completely put on them. The question we should be asking is “Why is this even news?” The mainstream media seems to think it is, and why wouldn’t they? It’s their chance to legitimately paint the right with a very broad brush. Take a picture of a couple people carrying signs, interview a man about it, then include the word “Tea Partiers” and you have yourself a headline! Hi-ya! Bruce Lee himself would be impressed with kung-fu that strong.
To add to the media circus we have Republican presidential candidates wielding the birther question like the golden sword of righteous power, which in truth is actually the wooden stick of incessant annoyance, best used for beating dead horses.
Donald Trump, CEO of The Trump Organization and TV personality, began making allusions to his presidential run at CPAC by repeating the phrase “if I were to run for President”. He even has people on the edge of their seat waiting to see if the rumors about announcing his run for POTUS on the season finale of his reality show are true.
Now, aside from the amount of class a man has to have to announce his run for leader of the free world on his television show that starred the likes of Gary Busey, Trump’s star power shone in full force when he entered the birther fray. Taking the reigns of the birther movement and whipping the proverbial horses into a frenzy, Trump drove the birther argument to new heights.
This finally forced Obama to release a long-form version of his birth certificate, which is something that he could have done during the whole three years of his presidency in the first place, but why do that when there’s a fat cow to be milked. Obama can now crack jokes at the right’s expense, and in liberal politics, that’s worth its weight in gold. Speaking of gold it was Obama who had spent plenty of tax payer dollars getting his lawyers to fight lawsuits that would have forced Obama to show his birth certificate in the first place. So even if you aren’t a birther, you can go ahead and take this personally.
My advice is something my parents used to tell me about how to deal with jerks growing up. Just walk away. The more we feed into the nonsense the more ammo we hand to the people trying to bring us down. As far as I’m concerned, we have far more damning things to throw at Obama than his absence of a birth certificate, and as far as the MSM is concerned, they’re always going to try to pick the fight, and we waste too much time and energy fighting the wrong battles.
We don’t have the time to deal with myths when facts are staring us in the face. Our country is on the verge of economic meltdown, we have communists and socialists in the upper echelons of our government, and we have dangerous enemies within and without our borders. I’d say our priorities at this point are pretty clear.
